A. Lange & Söhne

Lange & Sohne Grande Lange One Luna Mundi Set. Some thoughts.

The Grande Lange One Luna Mundi came as a set of two watches, limited in 101 pieces, in 2003. One in white gold, the other in rose gold.

Both versions share the same case, which is 41, 9 mm big and 10, 4 mm high. A small difference between the 2 versions? The case side which is brushed on the white gold, while the rose gold case is totally polished. Why? I don't know... But one thing is sure, each of them has very elegant and well balanced proportions.

The dials are different, here. The white gold shows the moonphase in the northern hemisphere along with the Ursa Major Constellation, while the rose gold depicts the moonphase in the southern hemisphere, with the southern Cross, which explains that the movement of each of them has a different reference: Cal 901.7 for the Pink Gold one, Cal 901.8 for the White Gold one, both beating at 3 hertz and having a power reserve of 72 hours.

The backside, so typically Lange:

The moonphase is accurate to 122, 6 years. Nothing exceptional, here.

Another Lange thing is the grande date.

BUT, and this may be the most controversial detail on the " Luna Mundi " and former Grande Lange One versions, everything is overlapping, here: The hours and minutes with the small seconds, and the grande date, too.

Some will find this display weird and busy, while others will find it charming. To each his own.

In comparison, the more modern Grande Lange Moonphase:

Grande Lange1 Moon Phase 25 Years 25 pieces WG,  2019:

And the Grande Lange One Moonphase Lumen, in 2016:

Nonetheless, I think the Luna Mundi Set was and still is a very charming offer from the past, 22 years after its release.

What do you think?

Best,

Nicolas
