I am a 26yo collector of Cartier watches among others things. I wanted to voice my opinion that Cartier has done a remarkable elevating the technicals of watch making but the newest watches are all way too big. I frequently travel between London, NYC, and Asia and I admire the company's ability to strike a balance between airport luxury mass-market and real fine watchmaking/jewelry - its a recipe for relevancy in the 21st century. Recently, I tried on the Tortue perpetual in the Old Bond St store and felt in love with the design and aesthetics. But it looked like I was wearing a Flinestone's size watch. So sad because otherwise I would have bought it on the spot
I understand that the mechanics dictate, to a degree, the size of the watch, but I fell in love with Cartier because they were able to make masculine, progressive, refined watches, not Bling rapper watches like AP, nor boring classical watches that are stuck in time. Cartier as a design brand strikes a balance between contemporary and classical, masculine yet elegant. I understand that for the low end of the market, there is demand for chunky sporty watches like the Calibre. But for fine watch-making, its not likely that a guy is looking for a $50-100k watch to go rock climbing, no matter how James Bond he may feel :-p
Men's watches should be 40-43mm and not super thick to be versatile. This is especially true for Europeans and Asian consumers which is Cartier's core. Under 38mm and it gets too feminine, and over 45mm is too chunky.
Lots of Cartier buyers must feel the same way about the size trend. Please make your voices heard!
We are the consumer. Artisans ultimately work for US
I have enjoyed Cartier design since my dad gave me my first XL Tank Basculante mechanical at 16. I hope its a lifelong affection...
