Cartier

JLC Duoface Grande Taille & Tank Louis Cartier

This is a set of interesting questions. I have thought about them before (which led to the consequences seen below...)(!).

First, I don't wear rectangular watches as much these days. But if I have to pick one, the two-in-one JLC would be my top choice. I find the Cartier a little more demanding ('pretentious?') because it is a tad more formal and the RG does not help. The Cartier is however a far better choice for the fitted shirt cuff but this is another story. Of the two, the Cartier had the infamy of a very troubling after-sales service, which has been duly recorded here somewhere in an older post. As for the JLC, none of my other JLCs has yet to seen any need for service. True, they are not regularly worn; but there are pieces that go back for more than two decades, and I find this a resounding testament to their quality (I subscribe to the adage, don't go to the service center if it ain't broken). The Cartier on the other hand broke inexplicably and without warning and it culminated in a fiasco at the service counter. And it was not even worn everyday--possibly only a few times when it could no longer be wound. I don't think I wore it after it was 'serviced'. The compare and contrast in this pair can't be more spot-on because the heart of this Cartier is also a JLC (a smaller movement of a smaller Reverso)!
