Patek Philippe

A come true at last !!!! (kinda long)

As some of you may know the 5960 has been my grail for a long time, almost from the time that I was released. Prior the 5960 I appreciated the mechanical aspect of Patek, but the designs left me cold. I knew that Patek was “The Best” but I had a hard time appreciating the simplicity of a simple time only Calatrava, and the perpetual calendars were all a little too mature for my taste. It seemed to me that Pateks were designed to be worn by my father or grandfather, not me.

All it took to forever change my mind about Patek was one single ad on the back of a Robb Report “Watch Collector” issue.

I couldn’t believe that was a Patek, the dial was so modern with its minimalistic windows for the calendar, far cleaner than the 5146. The mono counter of the chrono was cleaner than 5070. Even the choice of colors was very different, slate grey with a touch of red and blue. I could hardly believe this was made by the same Patek Phlilippe that made watches like the 5140 that I felt only older men would be interested in. Yet the case and chrono pushers were still very classic in design, I felt it was the perfect blend of classic and modern. I couldn’t stop looking at that ad, the more I looked at it the more wanted the 5960. I knew right there and then that it was the the Patek for me.

It was the perfect combination of features for me. I LOVE chronos, but I don’t particularly care for manual watches as I like to not have to worry about forgetting to wind it and it stopping without me realizing it. Though I certainly admire a perpetual calendar, Id rather the easier to use annual calendar. After all how many people actually wear a perp calendar every day to take advantage of never having to reset it ? The cost, complexity, and the cluttered dial of the 5970 kept it from ever being even a dream to me. The 5960 was just a step down from the 5960, and perfect for me.

Unfortunately I had never actually taken the time find out how much Pateks were, I knew they were expensive, but coming from the world of Rolex, I had no idea just how expensive. When I found out the price of the 5960 my dreams were crushed. Suddenly I felt that the 5960 would never be mine. I convinced myself that if I couldn’t have the 5960 I had to have a Patek of some sort .

In an attempt the satisfy my want for a Patek I purchased a 5167 Aquanaut, but I found it too small and thin on my wrist. Later I had the chance to purchase a 5070G and I was certain this would satisfy my want for the 5960, but it didn’t. On a few occasions I tried trading my 5070 for a 5960, but every time the deal would fall through and the 5960 would slip away.

So I set my sights on the 5980, after all it is the 5960’s little brother. I got the 5980 and I was SOOO excited, at last I would have that mono counter, and automatic chronograph.

I thought at last I would be happy and I wore the 5980 for a while, but there were a few things just not right about it. The chrono pushers were too hard, and lacked any kind of refinement. The pushers felt far from my 5070, closer to an ETA 7750, not at all what I expected from Patek. I also came to realize that the 5980 even with its SS bracelet, would never be used as much one of my Rolexes. Even if the 5980 were reliable enough, the cost would keep me from ever using it as a daily wearer. I realized though that I really did love the mono counter, and I began thinking about the 5960 again.

A while later the 5980 went to happy new owner who would love it as it was, and this arrived

AT LAST !!!! THE 5960P IS MINE !!!!!!

Here it is next to my 5070G

I still can't believe how two chronos from the same company can be so different. At first the 5070 was simply an attempt to satisfy my want for the 5960, but having them side by side its impossible to pick a favorite. They are each so special in there own unique way. The 5070 was the end of an era for Patek, and the 5960 was start of a new era. I'm incredibly grateful to be able to have both of these wonderful pieces side by side.

I prefer the cleaner clasp on my 5960 than that of the 5070, its shame its discontinued.

At last my very own 5960 wrist shot !!!

I just love the little details, such as the diamond discreetly placed between the lugs.

The case on this watch has the perfect shape IMO

I love this clasp ! Im so happy that I found a 5960 with it.

I have to say that Im still in a bit of disbelief, but I couldn't be happier.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who have posted pics of there 5960s. Pics are the only thing have helped me to go this long without the 5960 and not loose my mind.

Sorry for the huge post, but I hope you all can understand just how much I've loved this watch and happy I am to have it now. Though its been a long time and a long process, I wouldn't have it any other way. It has been a journey for me to acquire my 5960, and I'm confident that wait and research and having owned other Pateks has made finally having this one that much better.

Thanks for reading.
