F.P. Journe

Interesting comparison, Bob. …because the reasons behind the two watches with the similar design are very different ….

So we look at bit deeper…

The Octa was designed as a base movement (automatic) with the asymmetrical layout so that it could give space to integrate different complications in to the same movement and avoid stacking. As FP says. “I don’t make hamburgers.”and that’s why all octa watches are slim and sit well on the wrist. A lot of so called high end brands could take a lesson here. No matter the complication, they are all about the same height. The Octa dial design reflects the movement architecture. all with the time displayed to the right side - peaking out of your sleeve. The added complication to the left.
In this asymmetrical layout we have seen integrated : the Lune as is your example, the reserve de Marche, the chronograph, annual calendar, Perpetual calendar, universal time coordinated and some I maybe forget when listing from the top of my head.

The Lange 1 was of course designed as a manual wind.

Aesthetics are personal preference. I like the Lange 1 and respect it as a Lange icon, but it has always felt a bit stiff and cold. The case design of the Lange 1 I find clumsy on the wrist
