The “mega” grid you are referring to comes from the Laureato Evo3. They were first released in 2004 and the majority are not particularly rare and are at 44 mm. My quartz evo3 ref 80188 was released as a novelty on 2010
is 42.6 and very rare (I estimate less than 20 made). I prefer smaller watches and so find the 44 mm too large for me.
Yes, I am hoping that the 50th anniversary will trigger folks to understand and explore the neo vintage rare laureatos which is namely the 8010 and the 8017 laureato olimpico. Basically, what happened with the 222.
It is my belief that unless the rare and iconic laureatos such as the 8010 and 8017 are sought after; the current production pieces will not fly as high as they should. I do not believe that the more serious collectors buy in isolation. Rather, they buy RELATIVE to other pieces in the collection.
Again the 222 is a good example. If the original 222 from 1977 was not treasured and respected and in high demand, the current production historiques 222 can not fly. And vice versa.
So it will be a leading indicator of success to me for 50th anniversary pieces IF the 20th anniversary (1995) pieces fly. Again, it is all related and decisions are not made in isolation but rather relative to other iconic pieces in the model line.
Hope that makes sense.
Am I going to get a 50th anniversary piece? Not sure yet. Let’s see. There are way too many “Limited Editions” laureatos being released by GP now.
The 50th anniversary pieces will be special. But how extra special is yet to be seen. At this stage in my collecting journey, I only want to collect the extra special pieces and if see several listed on c24 below MSRP … then it’s an indicator that it ain’t “extra special”.

PS
The white date wheel seems to be a bug bear for you. It’s fine. To each their own.
To me, it’s totally fine and one only needs to look the latest 222 historiques to understand that there is a reason why the date wheel is white and not “matching” the dial color. But I find it too tiring to keep repeating myself on the design reasons and such.
