A Certain Kind of Information
It really isnt enough to say that a boutique is better informed than an AD, unless you have narrowed your choice to two models from the same maker. Ask the knowledgeable Breguet gent whether you shouldn't buy the comparable Vacheron. Ask the Vacheron gent the inverse question. Would you like another cup of coffee? My excellent, honest, family owned AD sells both brands, and is prepared to have a real conversation.
As to general boutique experience, by far the most positive for me has been at Chopard, in Milan and especially in Zurich, where a very smart, low key salesperson offered to show me some of the most complicated LUC pieces in the shop, even though I made it clear that they were beyond my means. Otherwise, no boutique I have wandered into has been a particularly special, brand-affirming experience.
