Hodinkee is a powerful and well-connected outlet in this business, it's unsurprising they (as well as other relevant players in the watch world) are trying to capitalize on their popularity in various ways, including these collaborations ;-)
Am I personally interested in ANY collaboration between a watch brand and a blog, or a car manufacturer, or even between two unrelated watch brands just because the design looks good? Honestly, not a chance! 
But the base of watch fans --- and consequently the readership of dedicated blogs, journals, and the like --- has become huge in recent years, so it's only good if we get a broader offering, whichever that is (See also today's other thread with the usual complaints that all the 1,065,000 (!) Pateks & Rolexes produced every year are always allocated to others! ;-)) At a quick look, chances are many buyers of these collaborations are also interested in the "modern Indies," which similarly pop up on the scene on a daily basis and, in select instances, offer to their customers truly gorgeous technical expressions and/or dial designs.... I (seriously) think this level of diversity is only healthy for our ever-increasing watch world!
