I think expectations had....

 

a lot to do with the price the Patek ended up.


Everyone anticipated the Patek top the charts. So naturally those who really wanted it knew they had to fork out a substantial amount of donation. I am not sure of the auction mode. (Open bid, close bid, mix bids etc). But the expectations of a Patek watch certainly contribute to driving the bid amounts up.

Also, there has been prescedences set by other Patek pieces in other auctions. 
Eg, the $800,000 chrono from 1950s,
Eric Clapton's Patek Ref 2499. 

These factors definitely help to determine the "reference values" of the only watch 5004T. The sky's the limit and the glass ceiling was set at Monaco on 28 Sep'2013.
