Horological Meandering

setting, winding, running habits

I usually have 3-5 watches readily accessible in a drawer that get rotated over a week or two then that group gets changed out or "evolves". I no longer use winders as I feel they just hurry up the day

the piece will need servicing. Relating to a car engine, its not good for one to never be run but it would seem that if you let it continuously idle (and only occasionally drove it) it would probably need
service sooner. I don't even keep my perpetual on a winder but its a Ludwig and is very easy to set (UN Marine Perpetual ltd). Additionally servicing that one will certainly cost a few bucks so why
speed up the need! I try to make sure they all get wound once a month or so along with keeping them out of harsh environments.

As a means of checking accuracy (and possible need for servicing) I usually set them to time displayed on my computer.. to the second. Pieces with a hack feature that have a minute hand that doesn't
start (engage) for 30 seconds are a challenging to get second hand and minute hand to hit minute markers in synch and sometimes take a couple of attempts, as are movements that do not have a hack feature. Never heard that about Pateks having the ability to coordinate minute hand to second hand. I'll now have to pay more attention to my Aquanaut! As it doesn't have a hack capability it would be great if it does that.. but do wonder if setting to a reference (computer for me) wouldn't still be a challenge.

I do feel the need to set date displays and therefore also see the advantage of a watch without one.
