some answers to your queries and some to the general observation from the original poster:
I do own some pateks, lange etc but when I say I like them all I LOVE THEM ALL. When I bought them, I've done fair amount of research, price included though not always a deal breaker, I bought and own watches I love wearing on my wrist. So don't judge me when I own 'perceived' expensive watches too because I can explain to you in details all the right reasons when I bought the watches for my personal enjoyment.
How much I'd pay for a watch? The RIGHT PRICE! Base on what formula? Darn, this is good question, any price so long I feel it's the RIGHT PRICE within my budget, hows that?
Actually what I'm driving at is price consideration to me is not the most important one, I'd kick myself if I paid a tone for a watch my friends said it's right for me! You decide what you like and pay for it yourself! So it's a subjective topic, There're poor billionaires and filthy rich millionaires.
There's a subtle difference when you buy a watch to impress yourself and to impress others, many end up kicking themselves if they belong to the latter group. On the contrary, the first group of owners probably prefer only the discerning would spot one in the wild, for the rest, they're better off not knowing it's there. I'd welcome a stranger walking up to me and compliment my watch for what it's worth.
I visit China many times a year, I have friends and relatives living and working there for years. I cannot proclaim I know China or its people well enough and though the places I visit are less than organised, I do walk in the street at night. Be vigilant, not just in China, wherever you're. Reading the original post reminds me of a friend saying you're constantly looking down when you walk trying to avoid a dog pooh, why not look to your sides and see the pretty flowers instead?
Just me,
Mech.
