What an essay. And great food for thought.
I think the mechanical watch industry is headed for a tough time, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will weed out the wheat from the chaff, and force the brands to focus on honest watchmaking.
On smartwatches, I think they appeal to different people, or different sides of a person. In an increasingly connected world, it is a source of solace to have a well-made mechanical watch on your wrist, if only to remind you that you are still human - living and beating away, but definitely finite, definitely mortal.
