What is a so-called "independent" independent of compared to a non-independent?

The cynic in me reckons one of the major differences is in the amount of cash dedicated to marketing, publicity and events, which suggests that the key difference is the need to market products.  Once your company gets to the point that you need to start doing serious advertising and marketing to sell enough products to meet your business objectives then you're probably going mainstream.  When all you need to do to sell half your annual production is for someone to do a photoreview of a prototype on this forum then you're independent (of the evils of marketing smile ).

On the other hand, just because a diverse range of companies and makers finds their watches discussed here doesn't imply that they have anything in common.  It could just be that they don't justify a forum of their own.
