Rethinking this a bit...
After thinking about this again and revisiting my earlier response, I think I need to modify my definition.
I decided to look at this from a purely personal point of view...
my personal point of view.
I realized that if I purchased a watch that was supposed to be from an independent, and I then found out that the person who's name is on the dial did not actually make the components and then assemble and adjust it himself...I would feel cheated.
That doesn't mean that I would think any less of the watch itself - after all, a well made watch is a well made watch. But if I was lead to believe it was made by an independent, in my mind that means something very specific.
I realize that this isn't what many think of when "independent" is mentioned, but that's the true allure to me...that it was made without the help of anyone else. To me, that's something very special and deserving of being called independent.
