I picked up one of these back in February when they were first released.
I immediately loved that this was a rare no-date Submersible and the "maxi" lume plots also really sets this reference apart. Ceramic bezel, 44mm 1950's style case, closed caseback and slight yellow accents against the blue are all pluses to me. The vertical brushing on the dial is very subtle. It is more pronounced on their renderings but in person you can barely tell even under direct sunlight. Here's a shot next to a Starbucks for reference.

I don't know who Mike Horn is (aside from the person Panerai keeps dedicated LEs to!) but this is a *really* appealing setup.

When did the blob markers become so large? Too big IMO, and that unfortunately lends a cartoonish look to this one. Too bad, because as you say, a dateless Submersible is a wonderful thing!
IMO, the other Submersibles are perfectly legible under water. I have dove with them before.
Don't forget about the magnification qualities while diving. You don't need a bigger diameter marker to be functional. You are surely correct about the majority of watches never seeing water though!
