It seems to be straying from the DNA of the brand.
Not the first time. Many years ago I had a 40mm Luminor. It was really perfect for my wrist, but it didn't feel like it was a Panerai. I got rid of it and got a 44mm-which was too big so I got rid of that and have stayed away from the brand ever since! To your point-38mm just doesn't seem to fit with the perception of Panerai. At least my perception. And it has nothing to do with the history of the brand, although that doesn't seem to matter if you can make a buck.
