Omega

My first Omega - the Railmaster πŸš‡

As with many of my watches it was many moons ago. Actually the first Omega I purchased was a Moonwatch, albeit that was a present for my father, as he worked for NASA in his early career, so a suitable memento.

When the 60th anniversary and this came out I went to check out both. Finally the non-limited standard production model won out for me for two reasons. I have for long been of the opinion that watch companies went down too far the route of recycling the past and did too little new things. In order to encourage them to do what I want them to do putting one’s money where one’s mouth is would probably be prudent - otherwise there is no incentive for them to change their ways. The other reason was that I much preferred the brushed finish of this one to the very shiny reissue.

In fact I think Omega got most design details right - the size is modest enough, there is no date, the vertical brushing on the dial is spot on, you have railroad tracks for your inner Railmaster πŸ˜‰ The crosshairs are a nice touch and the original cashmere strap was innovative at the time for a major brand. Likewise it was refreshing that they omitted a date on a mass market product. The METAS movement was a nice touch, too - even if quite standard for Omega at the time.

I could have done with a less prominent fauxtina but at least color wise it matches the watch quite nicely. Like mentioned in the other thread it could be thinner but at least it comes with a solid case back here.

I know mine would have been a rare choice amongst the WPS members but I have never regretted it. It’s a solid watch that will survive most of what you might throw at it, while not looking completely utilitarian. And it has enough details to distract you, should the environment prove to be less than captivating; at the same time it maintains a certain level of anonymity for those that you would prefer not to take too much interest in your wrist adornments.

Any other Railmasters out?
