The delta between an Omega chronometer . . .
. . . and a three-handed Patek, which cost roughly the same in the post-War era, has diverged to the point where the price ratio is at least 1 : 3 now. Omega's book of business has always been oriented towards volume, Patek's towards exclusivity. My sense is that what seems like a conundrum in the present is more a case of long-term trends getting played out over time.

Just to throw out some numbers open to correction.
Omega 250 parts maybe 40-80 man hours. High complications Patek 1000 parts at least 2000 man hours probably more. One watchmaker. Is about 2200 hr a year. Just my guess.
My point is: 39 hours watchmaker on avg for PP, not 1000 or 2000.
