Most watches between the 50s and 80s used acrylic crystals, because it has much better impact resistance than plate glass, and is very easy to work with. It's also about a third the density of sapphire, which is why RM uses it in their ultra lights. Omega uses it in the moonwatch for aesthetics, but also sells a sapphire version.
