One other consideration could be the sounds of the MR from different types of metal. For some reason maybe the gongs sound better hitting against platinum than gold?
p.s on the bright-side you can tell your wife that if she needs to know the time in the middle of the night in your tent she only needs to slide the MR switch on your watch!!
