However, who knows. I have ADD with watches. I also rarely sell them, so my collection has grown out of control. I’m about to start selling off pieces I never thought I’d sell because my tastes have changed. With that said, the 5711 is timeless. My plan is to keep it, and wear/enjoy it, then pass to my kids (along with my 5170g and 5167a).

I bought my 5712 on the gray market.
I specifically looked for a reference that was unpolished, full set, and fairly recent. If the price difference was big, I would have considered one with an extract from the archives or service papers.
It’s a meaningful difference.
This specific one is about a 20% discount verses others I’ve seen with a Certificate of Origin.
Personally I wouldn’t buy a watch with a 6 figure price tag without papers or extract.
But 20% is a lot at this price point.

+1....save the money and bank the $20K in an index fund....likely will be worth multiples eventually

IMO, price aside, you should ask for an archive to ensure authenticity of the watch, especially it is a piece to celebrate your milestone. Best of luck and let us know the decision.

do the deal with an archive. Put the pressure on the dealer and see what happens.
Given collectability seems to be important to you I'd want the Certificate of Origin and would not compromise there ...
The presence of the other items that came with the watch doesn't help me much when the one key irreplaceable item is missing. It's a modern Patek and I like to buy modern Pateks with Certificate if those are readily available. In contrast I could not care...
