Guidance on a 5711 purchase

I’ve been wanting to add a 5711 to my collection for quite some time, specifically the transitional -001 reference with Geneva seal. I just had a big milestone with my business so I’m thinking of adding one now.

I found one for sale through a dealer I’ve used in the past and trust. It’s a complete set except it’s missing the Certificate of Origin. It does have PP service papers from a few years ago. I do plan to wear this watch. It will not be a safe queen. However, I do think the -001 reference will be collectible long term, so hesitant due to the Certificate of Origin missing.

Do you all think it’s a bad idea to purchase a 5711 without the Certificate of Origin? The price is lower to reflect the Certificate missing. Since I will be wearing this watch, the lower price point is appealing, but it will be the most I’ve ever spent on a watch so looking for some guidance/reassurance.

I specifically looked for a reference that was unpolished, full set, and fairly recent. If the price difference was big, I would have considered one with an extract from the archives or service papers.

This specific one is about a 20% discount verses others I’ve seen with a Certificate of Origin.

Personally I wouldn’t buy a watch with a 6 figure price tag without papers or extract.

IMO, price aside, you should ask for an archive to ensure authenticity of the watch, especially it is a piece to celebrate your milestone. Best of luck and let us know the decision.

Is a gray dealer able to request an archive? What does requesting an archive entail?

Given collectability seems to be important to you I'd want the Certificate of Origin and would not compromise there ...

The presence of the other items that came with the watch doesn't help me much when the one key irreplaceable item is missing. It's a modern Patek and I like to buy modern Pateks with Certificate if those are readily available. In contrast I could not care...
