Obviously I like this reference as I own the 5170 G. And I cannot stress enough that this is one of the most comfortable wearing chronographs due to the very slim 10.9mm thickness (for a chronograph) !!!
The Patek Philippe Chronograph ref. 5170 , introduced in 2010 as a succesor to the iconic ref. 5070, was the first of the brand to feature a fully in-house caliber : the CH 29-535 PS . The case measures 39.4 x 10.9 mm Do you like this reference and which ...

Thank you for assembling this information. Very nicely done. The first time I saw a 5170 was in Qatar (Patek AD was located in the Lagoona Mall back then) and it was the J. I was so thoroughly impressed with it's classic beauty, slim handsome case, incred...
What always felt a tad odd about the reference to me is the placement of the subdials just a tad below the centerline of the watch. I find the effect less pronounced on the dark dials than the silver ones - hence find those more appealing 😊
Wonderful movement and great on the wrist. I think I'm with you on the j (the light dial r is also nice in its austerity). The sub dials on the black dials seem over-painted to me somehow -- a shame, as I quite like the versions with the Breguet numerals....
I think it’s quality or charm is that it feels harmonious where as the appeal of the 5070 lies in the many quirks- two different watches with different appeal. So the harmony of the J with a vintage vibe and G with black dial / no scale stand out to me as...
I completely agree with what you say about attention to detail and the ability not to repeat lazily. I also agree with your pick of J and G/black dial. Thank you! Best, Emmanuel
I generally prefer white metal. The 5170G-001 with the pulsation dial is a bit more interesting to me. It is also a strap monster and my go-to thanks to its versatility. Can't go wrong with any of the dial variants. ...
...but the Pulsation scale is useless to me and takes up too much dial space. Were I crazy rich I'd go with Platinum and diamond markers : ) Although rose gold is kind of perfect other than not being yellow gold...
...and I agree about the hands...I prefer the leaf. I'm normally not a diamond guy but these are so well done I don't know that most people would notice. But Yellow gold with leaf hands and no pulse/tach scale around the dial would be perfect. In other wo...
I struggled with this reference - I generally prefer leaf hands and double scales for classic chronos.. that combo wasn’t made! Haha.. Also I am still getting used to subdials below the 9-3 axis.. only the 1st gen datograph balances this perfectly with th...
Reason why I prefer the Cormes de Vache. And the big date on the 1st gen Datograph makes a good balance indeed. But I still find the 5170J full of vintage vibe and charm, personally. Best, Emmanuel
