The upgrade to the 5740 is extremely impressive!
The 5712/1A-001 is thin at 8.52mm? however I was admiring it the other day and rotating my wrist it ever so slightly and came to the conclusion that although it's thin it has significance presence in the dial, the case shape, bracelet design and simply the overall package. Meanwhile it slips ever so easily under a sleeve. Chunkier Nautilus models like the 5980/5990/5726 stand on their own - such as with a short sleeve shirt in Miami or Med beach towns. I've always treated my 5712/1A as more of an elegant option with suit/jacket/smarter sweaters.

I was at the "Whale Bar" at StR MalXXXXX with my 5712 several years ago! I still remember a sunfish that would follow me around whenever I went snorkeling. He/she followed me around for nearly two weeks!
I think I'm celebrating 15 years with my 5712 sometime next year. Time flies!

What I meant is that you had vision before everyone else. I think for many Rolex or omega or something similar is their first “real watch.” To choose a 5712 is wow. Great decision for a young patrick_y!

There certainly was no wait in 2010/2011 in all worldwide markets.
Short waits started around 2013/2014 in some markets. But if you had expressed serious interest in 2010 and offered to put a deposit down to back up your words, I can tell you that there was ample supply.

I always dreamed of a 5711 (which I still love) but when I became serious about details and discovered the 240 movement I started dreaming of a 5712 (and 5740 which is beyond reach for me at this point). And hence i wear a 5712. Plus the asymmetric design...
I prefer the 5712 over the the 5740.
Honestly, the 5740 movement, the 240Q movement, is a great movement. But it's past its prime. That movement is close to 50 years old. And in today's world where we fly back and forth, not being able to change adjust the time due to timezones on a perpetua...
I also expect modern perpetual calendars to have more instantaneous movements.
The Patek 240Q movement takes probably 4-5 hours to make the transition every day, starting a couple hours before midnight and finishing a couple hours after midnight. I would expect the transition to be faster for a modern movement.

5712 and 5740 are my favorite iterations of a modern nautilus.
Partially due to the 240 movement.
