More and more watch companies have resorted to tradition as a core value as well. Whilst Patek is ahead of the curve on that, and justifiably so, it as a core and unique selling point will decline over time as other watch firms clamor unto the same tradition bandwagon.
And most of these, JLC, VC etc all have a equally illustrious, if not more so, history as Patek. But it's Patek CONSISTENT harping on it that stands it part from the crowd, for now.
Everyone is doing the vintage gig, from Paneria to JLC, and attempting a sometimes tedious link to past glory. What Patek has done, successfully is EVOLUTION slowly but surely. And it is done with design philosophy and finishing ethos comparable to the historical piece, if not better. The others have just faithfully reproduced the original. Others like Omega has reinterpreted the Ploprof successfully. So in terms of products, I.e. Watches, Patek has done a superb job.
But tradition is not just product, but also history and romance being core anchors. It's a overall package, and that's why Patek keep harping on cross generational traits of it's watches, sometimes appropriately, sometimes gimmickly. The question is do you think they shamelessly exploit that emotional heartstrings or it is purely evident in their product and management philosophy. I am certainly a sucker for it. I have got 4 friends who have sent me pictures of their children posing with a Patek advert featuring "Father and son" and the caption always read..."oh no...what have I done" or "geez, time to save up" or proudly "he has my genes!!"
As to your question as to whether there should be pink or yellow aquanauts, even if Patek were to do it, I doubt they can do as well as AP, who pioneered that genre!! At the rate AP is going with the colour changes, it will become a core design philosophy and company tradition!!
So in a nutshell, do I love Patek for it's Tradition....oh yeah. but they have to manage it and continue to properly communicate that, from product to management, and not just it becoming another soundbite, especially if others are doing it too.
Best,
Horo
