I guess you are talking about the dial array for a same metal Eric?
Well, even if I wouldn't like to have plenty for a given reference, I think in brings diversity and helps not seeing always the same version all the time for several years.
This being said, everyone I guess will have his interpretation of "too much".
To me, having only 2 or 3 based on a selection of metals (not all the metals for a given reference) is a "+" as it helps adapting a case we like and would like to acquire without being stopped by a kind of dial color we don't like (for instance I don't like the coldness of some silvery ones). Same with numerals' style.
Here, we have a Y and 2 G. There will certainly be (at least) a R and a Pt in the future.
But yes your observation is certainly right: the 5170G has 2 dials, so has the 5200G, 5270G etc...
But I remember it was already the case in the 80's/90's too, wasn't it?
A question of personal feeling I guess.
