About the 5168, the dimensions are a tough issue to deal with. Some clients have a big wrist and 40mm watches are much too small, especially when considering a sporty version. Of course someone with a normal or small wrist will not like that. This is very subjective and there are not many watches in the Patek Collection that provide a larger case for them (5524, 5905...).
You spoted the dial right, it is inspired by the 1526 and the lugs are from the 2405 reference. I'm also very attracted by this dial layout and an AC would be welcome to find something very nice and more affordable.
You're quite a number of Purists who are very attracted by the 5372. They really found a good inspiration on this line-up indeed!
I also think the 5170G-01 was my favorite. But I must say that this P version is now my new first in the 5170 family. When it comes to dials it is very subjective and all depends on what we've been used to seeing so I totally understand your feeling.

I think they may find back their place in watchmaking

The 5131 P is very clever from Patek to combine it with a p-bracelet and the 5170 p with diamonds, for same reasons:
