'72 1675 GMT-Master

With my 40th approaching fast, I was determined to find something to celebrate. With nothing modern really catching my eye, I looked for something vintage, main criteria was to find something from 1972.

Then a stroke of luck (or maybe by luck it found me), a GMT Master from the third quarter 1972, and given my birthday is in September - result!!!

So, the watch arrived, stamped III/72 on the inside case back, matching period serial number, and rivited bracelet from 7/72.

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of the pepsi bezel (except on the original non crown guard version), but I wasn't going to turn it down for that.

But after seeing Caius's excellent post on his Fat Lady with the black insert, the next hunt was on...

Ghost-Chaser gave me a quick lesson by email on these bezel retaining springs (i know, give me a 3H Bund Fifty Fathom, and I know them inside out, but this is a different watch all together!!), and in no time, we're in bits, and all cleaned up.

New bezel in place, the watch (for my eyes) looks stunning, I love the heavy black detail, with that small touch of red on the GMT hand - awesome.

Next, is the bracelet. I found the riveted bracelet a bit brutal on the hairs on my arms!! So there's no way I can wear it full time on that. So I'll try it for a while on a nice soft back leather NATO. If the bracelet look takes my desire, I'll use a 93150 bracelet I have from my red submariner. I know, it won't be truely correct, but at the end of the day, I want a watch that is confortable to wear.

The indexes are starting to get a bit of patina, and is looking nice, just a small touch of cream.

The worst thing so far....my wife says that as its for my 40th, she believes that she should take it away, place back in its box to wrap and hold until September!! NO!!! I want to wear it for the summer!!!

I don't think I'm going ot win this argument, but until then, I got a few wrist shots first!!

A beautiful watch in my eyes!!

Thanks for looking

Cheers Tony
