Embarrassing marketing, not just Rolex.
Some of us were born in an analog world, but now the world is digital, so nowadays who cares about functionality when choosing a watch? The watches used to be tools for many different needs that today does not exist anymore. Maybe a perpetual calendar, maybe a minute repeater, and just because they are so cool, not because we need them to tell us what day is today, or sing what time it is when it`s dark. I buy a watch mostly because I like the way it looks.
About which Daytona version I would choose, I think it's mandatory to see them live and feel them on the wrist to get the correct idea. I guess you already have seen them live, if not, I suggest you to do so.
The Oysteflex models look great but I'm not sure about them, I'm aware of some strap issues with the right fitting. The SS versions are very nice, from pictures I'd say I prefer the black one, but once you see them live, the white one looks much better to me. The black one, depending on the light conditions, has a lack of contrast and some times it's not easy to read.
In the end, it's just a matter of taste.
Best,
