Wearing my Pre-Land Dweller today!

Inspired by the announcement of new Rolex model at Watches and Wonders today I’m enjoying my “pre-Land Dweller” model ☺️☺️☺️.

This is reference 1630 c1978 which actually it is not powered by a quartz movement watch but by a mechanic/automatic movement 1570.

Ref 1630 was launched about three years before the launching of the quartz model.

Some sources tell that the quartz movement caliber 5035 was not ready yet but their cases were and so Rolex fitted the 1570 mechanical movement in the new case designed for the quartz model probably to test the reaction of customers about a so radical change of shape of a Rolex casing.

Regret to say that I found this particular example with an incorrect bracelet model belonging to a 17013 reference.

Correct bracelet is 96673 with three gold links rows which I’m afraid not easy to find to replace it as original.

I feel this model is relatively rare as the production was very low.

It was offered in two variants: all steel ref 1530 “oyster Perpetual Date” and ref 1630 steel and gold “Oyster Perpetual Datejust” which were produced between 1975 through 1977.

I love the Quartz Rolex and own a few of them and this particular model which predates de Quartz line is a little known variant which I find very interesting and attractive.

I will probably add the new Land Dweller to my collection if I have the chance.

Best cordial regards
Abel
