Great reminder, the cocktail party check..
It’s really amazing how the site has maintained a general tone of civility for as long it has existed and all throughout its various iterations.
Personally, I’m with most of you. I’m from the other side of the world so quite susceptible to Asian jokes but I don’t mind it at all. Of course, it does become tricky as we all draw different lines on the sand with regard these things.
If I may offer a piece of advice. Once a shot has been fired then somebody gets offended and voices it out, I find that it’s always easy for the presumably offending party to adopt a self deprecating attitude and offer an apology either through pm or through a quick reply in a thread. We’ve seen this happen time and again and it’s usually effective in preventing an online bar fight.
If we’ve lasted all this time being gents, I’m sure it’s quite easy for us to just say sorry. And curse him or her out once you “put down the phone”. Just kidding :-p

I wholeheartedly agree with you but humor often is de facto often based on stereotypes. So there is always a risk of hurting someone, somewhere… So yes you’re right but … Dirk

Part of the problem for our site and the moderators is precisely the tendency to consider all here . . .
. . . as friends. I'll crack a joke when I'm around pals I've known for a long time, but our online community here is global and partly anonymous.
In principle I have no issue with humorous postings.
But the caution is merited. Having spent a number of years in the worlds of diplomacy and international relations, my experience is that one of the most difficult commodities to transport across borders is humour.
