Lange makes really nice dress watches

I think the 1815 (in 40mm) is one of the nicest 3 hand watch.  If patek launched a simple 3 hander with the design of the 5078g/5178g (with breguet numerals), then I will change my opinion about the 1815. The lange 1 is also nicer than any patek calatrava, in my opinion.

However, when we move up to higher complications, the comparison tilts in pateks favour.  When I was looking for my perpetual cal chrono, I considered the Dato perpetual vs the 5970.  The Dato had all the specs ie beautiful inhouse movement, jumping minute counter, flyback, big date. The 5970 uses an old lemania movement, arguably too small for the 40mm case, no flyback nor jumping min counter. But on the wrist, the 5970 blows the Dato away - the case is gorgeous, the dial perfectly harmonious. The dato perpetual just doesn’t work - it’s just too thick with the protruding caseback, to the extent that one can say it lacks finesse. You just need to look compare the profile picture of these 2 watches to see what I mean.

One can say the same abt the 5070 vs the datograph 1st gen (or the 1815 chronograph). On paper the Dato should trump over the 5070. But on the wrist, despite all its flaws (lemania movement is way too small for the 42mm case), the 5070, with the case design and dial, is more beautiful and more wearable than the Dato.

I would say that a watch is way more than just the movement finish - the dial, the case, all have to come together in a harmonious package, and this is where patek shines.
