Evidently being diverse can only result in mediocre products? Then how is Elon managing to do so much more than just build excellent electric vehicles?

A number of legacy car manufacturers haven't invested heavily into electric cars because they don't think it's the best way to achieve mobility, even (or maybe especially) when considering being planet friendly. That's why Toyota has put so much R&D into hybrids and why Mazda keeps trying to advance ICE technology. As far as ICE not being capable of further development that's what seemed to be the case in the early 80s but now gas cars are much cleaner than then while making 3-4 times as much power. Pinnacle can be a moving target. Let the two technologies coexist or compete. I think there is a time and place for both and that if one becomes far superior overall it will become dominant or the sole survivor on it's own merit. The fact that governments feel the need to mandate one over the other says a lot about which currently is perceived to be a better option by most people. It's the mandates that are also putting the big squeeze on legacy manufacturers. I know you are a very smart person who obviously knows a lot about the car industry but when it comes to Chinese cars one thing not touched on is the advantage of being in a communist country that has a long term plan to dominate all aspects of everything globally and is willing to do whatever it takes (like subsidizing) to achieve that goal. You can't believe everything you read or hear but I've read that most Chinese people who like electric cars would prefer to have a Tesla over the Chinese equivalent. I'm sticking to my CX-5t for my trip car, my MX-5 Club RF for my fun car and my 2nd gen Fit for a city runabout. I'm old so hopefully I won't need to buy more cars. I have nothing against people who drive or want electric cars but they are not my ..... choice.
