Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in platinum – on the wrist

50 years ago the first Cosmograph was launched and it was dedicated to “professional” racing drivers.

An evolved version with black bezel and screw-down pushers (waterproofness) was introduced in 1965.

In 1988 the Cosmograph Daytona got a self-winding and superlative chronometer movement, not to mention the redesign smile

The caliber 4130, the first in-house chronograph by Rolex, was introduced in 2000.

Now in 2013 they introduced a new version in platinum, with an ice blue dial and monobloc Cerachrom bezel.

Is it still a professional “tool” and if not, when did it stop?

OK, there is still a “simple” version in steel … but those never worked for me – at least not the versions from 1988 to 2012.

Don´t burn me, it´s just my never ending difficult relationship with Rolex. It´s less about Rolex itself (most of the time), but quite often because of the “audience”. Most of you won´t agree, but at least they will get my point. Hopefully!

I am aware that I am the last here who can claim to be an expert of Rolex ;-)

Back to the topic.

For the first time I had a Rolex on my wrist that convinced me, more than any Rolex I tried/handled before. I was offered the watch by a young sales man at a reputable AD and he asked me if I would like to see it. To be honest, I was not absolutely keen on from the beginning.

Then I thought: Why not? Give it a try. Maybe it helps with my paradigm smile

The box was not to my taste, the watch was ok in the box … and the big surprise started only when it was on my wrist. It felt solid, something I am not used from Rolex and their bracelets. Of course it is heavy because of the platinum, but it is not too heavy and feels great on the wrist. The very appealing dark brown bezel looks amazing and fits perfect with the ice blue dial.

Let´s have a look:

The size (40mm) is perfect on my wrist.

The whole watch is amazing – even the price.

It was not that easy to take it away from my wrist, but if I would be in the market for a new chronograph in that price range I would (probably) not go for it. I am still not wealthy enough for a Rolex smile

Will this watch be collectible and a must-have in the long run? Any predictions?

For sure it is not a “tool” anymore, at least not in that version.

However, it is a beautiful watch!

Oliver

PS: After thinking twice, there was another one which got my attention before:

Never tried it on my wrist … smile
