I'll advise to go by train...
since (1) the Swiss give public transport priority over private one and (ii) therefore, in general and especially during major events such as the Basel fair (which double the inhabitant number of a city like Basel), parking place will be rare and expensive.
There are convenient connections from Linz with only one stopover to Basel.
Alternatively, Swiss and Austrian Airlines offer direct flights Linz-Basel which conveniently leave early in the morning (but are not exactly cheap). The is a bus transfer from Basel airport directly to the exhibition square.

Hi Ed, You already have your room confirmed? If not, I doubt you would now find a hotel in Basel (they were all sold out months ago) so you will more than likely be in one of the outlying towns unless you are very lucky. Andrew

It not too far
I have stayed near there before and it is not too far away. Not as convenient as Zurich (in terms of lots of trains) but certainly closer by car.
