Horological Meandering

I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion ...

If the money is not burning a hole in your pocket, I would rather keep it where it is and educate myself (here, of course!). You are very likely to find alternatives, the more of them, the longer you are reading here.

Of course, a certain cultural background is important for the decision, too. There are regions where a steel/gold Rolex is considered very flashy. Your other suggestions are much more discreet.

Do you intend to wear the watch during sporting activities as well? If this is the case, water tightness and solid construction overall will also be an argument.

Maybe I just list a few of my own thoughts, and leave it to you to decide whether they are helpful or not.

1) Breguet XXI: My favourite of these three. Has the technically more interesting and rare movement, the watch features many fine details on case and dial you never get tired of admiring. Works perfectly with every kind of outfit, with leather strap also fine with business suit and tie.

2) Roley Daytona: Once was a mega-hype, now it is reduced to what it really is: an excellent chronograph, sportive yet elegant. The finish of the precious metal versions is first rate, there are also much more dial alternatives than with the steel version. I would definitely look for a white gold version, this is not overpriced.

3) Rolex Submariner: The classic Rolex, you either love it or hate it. To be honest: In bi-color, I hate it. In my eyes, this is not a diving watch any more, so I would rather opt for a steel-only Submariner, or the much better choice: look for the older, discontinued Yachtmaster in steel/platinum (or was it white gold?). This is one of the best Rolex watches ever, IMHO.
