Quota's are based on reasoning....
... and reasoning is out of the equation in watch issues 
... lol... I gotta admit that i've been going through the exact dilemma. I realized that having a collection with less watches, but "REAL" watches, was the logically evolution. 1st they get more wrist time, and i end up loving them more and more. 2nd, i don't feel bad for neglecting some nice pieces. 3rd, i am leaving room for the "+1" watch .... u know that +1 that makes us all go forward in that craziness...lol....
Ah, to get back to the quota, 4-5 watches :
1- daily, casual, sporty
2- Perpetual Calendar. Love that complication
3- tourbillon. Its a must
4- Timezone.
5- The next one
I can put it in another way. The must in my collection that would satisfy me fully and would all get decent wrist time :
1- A Rolex
2- An IWC
3- A JLC
4- A Lange & Sohne
5- ???.. Still thinking about it

There is a quota, and then there are the "extras."
I would probably do best with about ten watches. However, I have many more. My tastes seem to change, so even when I have a watch that does not get much wear I tend to hold on to it in case I once again get interested in wearing it.
Well, my self-serving rationale
is to have 3 good pieces to hand down to each of my children. Its a noble reason for me to divert my resources.
A golden rule
All the watches which add something to my collection. Another golden rule: My Banker. So, 1 and 2 are my watch quota. Best, Nicolas
