This consolidation is endemic in the publishing industry as well
I was involved in half-dozen deals of this sort, at a lower level. Sometimes this is bad for all, but I think most of the time consolidation does force some of the more "relaxed" employees in each organization to show their worth or be shown the door.
The good ones who fall by the wayside pick themselves up and find a way to do by themselves what management wouldn't fund before.
I think in publishing and perhaps to some extent in watchmaking the barriers to entry of a new brand are fairly low, so it's hard to say that this consolidation at the top hurts customer choice -- after all who needs more than this many Swiss brands (
