Yep, I need to keep it brief tonight but I was given a really nice and thorough presentation by the kind folks at the Brand today (plus a couple of bottles of champagne to enjoy my day between Portofino and Genova, which never hurts! :-))
I honestly found it a very appealing watch, both horologically and aesthetically, though an obvious point of discussion was the difficulty of LV to reposition themselves in this different market, especially at a time when it's *exceptionally* competitive! I believe the current strategy is to try and attract "good" collectors from other top watch brands to their new Tambour line, rather than their existing clients only, and the price seems roughly in the right range to me (at least for the two steel versions, at Euro 19.5k; the other three references are far more expensive). In a month or so from now, there's also going to be a big surprise from the same line, from what I understand....
We discussed at length, and it was good to see the LV watch folks are extremely competent. Critically, they are also well aware that they HAVE to get the marketing for this piece right, and I believe they are acting accordingly. My honest sense is that, while it will be harder for LV to appeal to folks who can access Patek or AP, etc. at retail, given the REALLY nice product they created, they will likely be competitive with many other collectors.... ;-) Time will tell!
Cheers.
