Patek Philippe

Agreed

It's a racket in some ways... but the AD's side is not fully understood either. In my conversation with him, I continued to learn his side of it, which was not entirely BS, IMHO.

At this time in Patek history, the price is more important than the watch. Hard to say what the future holds, but the more I learn about Patek, it seems it has been this way for quite some time, and no downturn in sight.

I agree that Lange is more of a true connoisseur's watch these days. Many brands are 'finer' than Patek.

But since a lot of us have lost money in our collecting adventure, we do get very excited to buy a 5980 at several tens of thousands less than going rate. Then there's the genuine excitement of having the watch at all, when it is so sought after, and so relatively new. The kid in us!

If I love the watch, great! Keeper. If not, it will be easy to find it a happy home, in about .00000000001 seconds.

Weirdly, the last few Pateks I've had have all seemed overrated to me. And not too many new models speak to me anymore. In some ways, I openly admit, in this specific case, with the 5980, it is about the money.

The old feeling I felt for Patek I now feel for my incoming Simplicity. Or when I see pics of Roger Smith's work. Or Voutilanen. Or the like.

Patek is like a stock on the market.

I think the guys who know the least about Patek, enjoy Patek the most. The ones who are sold on the brand one balmy and romantic afternoon at the AD, and walk out with a 5127J.... ah, what bliss to believe wholeheartedly.... For me those days are gone, but I still keep coming back. It's become 'something else' now.

And I still may pass on the 5980.
