I had been avoiding Patek...
...until a good friend of mine drew my attention to 5146G (with gray dial) as his next target. Very practical and "natural" on his wrist. It kind of opened my eyes and had me re-consider the brand. Like you, it broadened my horizen. And I took a plunge on 5134P - sorry, I was not particularly looking for a calendar watch, and am relatively a "manual winding" guy 
But my point to your post is 5146 is, yes it is a VERY good and I totally understand and agree that it takes you to the Patek world. Great choice, I think.

I am seriously considering taking the plunge on a patek philippe 5146 with the cream dial. Anyone with any knowledge of this watch? I've always been a Zenith guy, but thought was time to broaden my horizons....and empty my wallet. Thanks.

and a great looking classic annual calender. Cream dial is also my favorite and personally I would prefer one with the newer cal.324. Good luck!
How can I tell it's a 324 and not a 315?
Just wanted to inquire, how can one tell if the watch they're looking at has the 315 base movement or the 324 base movement? They look similar. I would prefer the 324 movement because of the 28.8K vph over the 315 movement; the slight sacrifice in reserve...

not entirely correct re: 8 arms on 315
I have a 5146J with slate dial which I adore, but mine is the transitional model, it has the 315 movement but it has the newer 4 arms on the balance just like the balance on the 324.
