It is somewhat of a vexing decision. I really like the hunter case. It reminds me of my very first Patek I purchased 20 years ago, 5054 J. The hunter or officers case is quite unique making the watch special. I like the retrograde date on the 5159. I do agree that the dial is a little busy and the Roman numerals are elongated compared to the 5059 ( which is a very nice reference). The piece would likely serve as a watch I would wear less frequently. I likely would not put it in my weekly rotation all the time.
The 5940G is definitely more "user friendly". It is lower profile which lends itself to daily use at work. I agree that this watch is a little stark and colder than the warm and romantic 5159R.
Both of these references have their place. I like them both very much. The cost is about the same.
Now the 5059J is another QP I like very much. This reference has a very nice dial layout and the hunter case. This reference is a good value in the market today. It is 36mm which is at the lower end of the size spectrum for me. Some say it looks like a hamburger. Very funny. The other problem with this reference is that I must buy it from a grey dealer which I have never done and don't like doing. My AD does not have a new old stock of this piece.
Thanks so much for all the discussion. It helps me a lot when considering these great references.
