Richard Mille

I think I may prefer the RM005

I think the 005 has been discontinued, although it may still be available from some dealers.  (005 is no longer on the RM website).

I agree with one of the posters that 010 seems a little large (can't wait to see the 011, therefore).

I have had the benefit of trying on the ltd edn 005 Ti (Felipe Massa).  It is a wonderful looking watch, and is amazingly light.  Feels like a swatch, and is so playful it is fun.

The straps are very nice.  Unlike traditional leather straps, the RM straps don't feel as uncomfortable if one is sweating (as one might one a 100m dash to the gate at the airport).

I won't say 005 is a dumbdown RM.  At the price it is commanding, one could buy an annual calendar PP with change.  And I am not sure if that is not a better buy, if one is more concerned with function than looks.

I know I might be crucified for this, but at least some of what RM is about is its looks.  For that reason, I would not go for the 016, simply because it is not the trademark RM look.

In terms of movement, I read from this forum that 005/010 (and therefore 016, and also the 011) all use the Vaucher movement (previously owned by Parmagiani), whereas the more expensive models use Ranaut and Papi designed movements.  R&P design for AP, and AP has some cutting edge models, but I am not an expert on movements to tell which movement is more reliable.

By the way, I think the beat on the 005 is very fast, maybe 28,800.  The seconds hand seems therefore to move continuously, and is fun to watch.  A must have if one spends a lot of time on telephone conferences...

For what it's worth, I know some people say they will not consider Ti.  The reason they gave is that it is such an expensive brand (and watch) that the watch should be in precious metal.  I am not sure i agree with that.  There is something to be said about spending a lot of money on a watch that neither looks nor feel expensive.  On a more serious level, however, I think if RM is about new designs and new materials, then there is something to be said about buying Ti instead.  It is relatively newer than traditional precious metals.

There is bling, and there is reverse bling, but both are bling bling at the end...
