Richard Mille

Quiet group!...

Maybe people are still recovering from the extraordinary RM012 presentation in Switzerland...

Anyway, a few quick comments:
- Try both the RM005 and the RM010. I know that in Los Angeles and Chicago, dealers have both models available
- The RM010 has in essence two changes to the RM005: a more skeletonized movement and a larger case size

- I am an owner of a PG RM005, and use it as a daily wearer and beater, here's some personal experience:
a) It is by far the most comfortable watch in my collection - the backplate is ergonomic to my wrist geometry, the crown extends comfortably (no new skin impressions a la Rolex!), and the straps used are seemingly hypoallergenic
b) At the smaller size (mind that this is still larger than the average watch), it is very versatile in different occasions, but may be a little challenging if you are used to AP, Panerai, or other large watches
c) From a function standpoint, the movement is probably overly simplistic at this price range (yes, variable rotor geometry was probably the work of an overzealous marketing exec) - but at the same time, I think the use of avant garde design elements, finishing, and high tech materials help support its premium. I would argue that the dial's 3-d effect is even more pronounced than the back of other leading skeletonized movements.
d) The selection of the right case material (PG, WG, and Ti) is important and is worth a visit to the dealer. My selection was simply due to personal preference on metal and the need to "feel I got my money's worth" smile
e) After trying a RM010 in the flesh, I dabbled for two weeks about the RM010, but decided to pass on it, primarily because I felt the case was a little too big in proportion to the movement (the case became the focal point instead of the dial). I feel that the larger case would be better suited for a more complicated piece. Completely subjective analysis.
f) There are some RM elitists out there, who believe that the RM005 / RM010 models dumb down the brand's exclusivity to the common man. That's complete hogwash. Within the sport-watch arena, they are within the "best" if not the absolute most exlusive sport watch in the world. Think about the comparators - limited edition AP's (significantly wider distribution net and numbers) or a Patek Nautilus (a sports Patek? a bit oxymoronic). And, if you feel connected to the brand, who knows what RM's will be in your future?

Good luck with your choice. Remember, try before you buy.

Regards,

Peter
