I have the same question in my mind ubik.
If one switch dials or case so that a watch is period correct for the purpose of selling at a higher price and collectors / traders INSIST it is " original" ...........i find that " unethical". I am not saying all vintage watches are like this. Many are original in the true sense.
Another big question mark is 90% of these watch dont come with documents , yet collectors/ traders INSIST its not "important" . Patek is an exception cause you can get archieves.
Suddenly there are unique varients coming up without provenence from Rolex and yet collectors/ traders and auction houses endorse these piece for extraordinary prices ........another question mark for me.
I love vintage watches, i find them extremely sexy. But in all honesty, i do not like how it is represented so heavily by traders and auction houses who dictate their own terms. Just my 2 cents
