Yes indeed, trust but verify - that's the whole reason why I linked you to the GREET model and the MIT LCA course in my previous post, for your own verification needs! The unfortunate case is, verification takes a lot more work than trusting, so most people just tend to give up on the process and goes with their preformed opinions instead!
In science, we try to make it easy by already doing a verification process (peer-review) before publication, which is why typically we are able to trust peer-reviewed publications (despite the issues with the process) more easily - hence why I linked peer reviewed articles (and a publication from ANL) rather than just news articles. For the general public though, I'm not sure what recourse there is apart from taking the time and learning the skills it takes for you do to your "verification" part before you can "trust" - that's not something a scientist can, and should, tell you how to do
