SIHH 2016: Lange Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon.

Another interesting release from Lange, this year, the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon.

So, as you can guess, you have an exceptional chronograph coupled to a grande date which is associated to a complete perpetual calendar and, cherry on the cake, a superb tourbillon which has the good taste to be located on the back side.

Still, I prefer three watches, one for the Tourbillon, one for the Perpetual Calendar and one for the Chronograph, but for those who are mad about the " three watches in one " solution, this one is a serious and interesting offer.

The case is made of platinum, 41, 5 mm big, which is good, 14, 6 mm high, which is quite thick. Without speaking of the weight, quite important.

The perpetual calendar, complete, with a moon phase accurate to one day each 122, 6 years, can be set, in a synchronized way, through the pusher at ten o' clock. The days and the months are not that easy to read. But since we don't read time anymore, but as we admire it... none

The Chronograph is flyback, with jumping minutes.

The Tourbillon has a stop second.

As for the movement, the Cal 952-2 is superlative in its decoration and in its characteristics:

- 59 jewels, which is not exceptional, but less common, 1 diamond, too.

- 5 screwed gold chatons.

- 729 parts!

And, last but ont least, very impressive to look at. Sculptural.

This movement beats at the quite pace of 18000 vibrations per hour, and has a power reserve of 50 hours.

One last detail, the power reserve, located between 9 and 10 o' clock. Discrete and original, a bit the same than the one of the JLC Extreme Lab 2.

Here are the few pictures I could take:

The bomb:

No bad, not bad... Even if I would still prefer a Datograph first generation, a Langematik Perpetual and a Lange One Tourbillon.

Looking forward to reading your comments and thoughts,

Best,

Nicolas

Being Lange, of course they had to put 3 in one.... Just to show they can, but like you, I would rather the 3 in seperate watches ... Even though Lange are at the high end of pricing, this and the L1 Perpetual Tourbillon are both stunning watches, but just totally out of reach price wise because of the add...

But there is already a Datograph Perpetual in the collection. Ok, not black dialed, but I am sure it will come some day. Thanks, Imran.

I like it a lot Hi Nicolas and thanks for the report, you seem to have ahd a lot of work last week! I'm not a fan of the usually bigger sizes we see in the very complicated models. Here, it seems an exception as the watch seems, on the paper, to remain "acceptable". I mu...

A nice looking watch, with a well integrated tourbillon, I agree. A lot of pleasure rather than work, as every year. It just takes a lot of time to digest all these novelties. Best, Mark, and thanks for your feedback. Nicolas

The movement is really a "bomb" as you said. A watch to be worn upside down (if you remembered a "special" dato photo posted by Alex83 one month ago). Good job LANGE. Cheers, Patrickh

The best feature, in my opinion. Thanks for your feedback, Patrick.

Spectacular piece The look and the technicals are stunning. Out of reach for me but if we ignore that technicality I personally struggle with manual perpetuals. Perhaps with a 30-60 day power reserve I would change my mind... I would personally rather go for the double spl...

Mechanically speaking, the Double split is the number one, if you can live with the proportions of its case.

Dato double split number one over a 5370P? Naturally very subjective call and I realize I am on thin ice skating here on the ALS forum but my pref would be the 5370P or even a 5204P... However I would easily pick a Dato updown over a 5170G...

Mechanically, I disagree. The Double Split is naturally over a simple Split.

Hands on review of the Lange & Söhne 1815 chronograph boutique edition

The 1815 chronograph was first introduced in 2004 but stayed only three years in the Lange & Söhne catalog. This watch occupied a special place in the collection and was distinguished by its pulsometric scale, inclined flange and its staggered sub-dials closer to the dial bottom. The withdrawal of the big date of the Datograph broke the perfect equilateral triangle drawn by the double-window and the sub-dials but it remained true that the original 1815 chronograph exuded a lot of charm. The main criticisms which were issued against it were well-known (a 36 hour power reserve which was considered as too short and the small size of the sub-dials) and Lange aimed to correct them when the next version of the chronograph was unveiled in 2010.
