A story of friendship - and a Seiko 6602-8040. Arigato Art-san!

A long, long time ago, four Purists met in Zagreb. Damjan, Padj, Art and yours truly. As so often at these events watches were discussed, bread was broken, online friendships cemented in real life. Art even showed us his trademarked photography approach and I am sure the waiters at a particular bar are still discussing that odd group, who kneeled before the sofas instead of sitting on them Art then topped this in a gesture truly worthy of a Purist and decided to send me a watch, because he felt it would fit .....Story

Deliberations on Dials, Part 2: Form vs Function

Avatar

This is the second in a series on Dials and the significant role they play in our watch appreciation. As shown in Deliberations on Dials, Part 1 (CLICK TO VIEW) , dials can act as the "Marketing Department" of the watch. They not only draw us in with their beauty, but can also reveal technical details about the watch. Although you might think of the dial as primarily cosmetic, the dial performs important functions, which I hope to unveil later in this series...Story

Overview of the Seiko Presage Series, Part 2 The Movements

Avatar

Welcome to part 2 of the Seiko Presage comparison INTRODUCTION This post has some minor technical information about the Presage movements. If you are looking for jewel counts and when the plastic date wheel finger was replaced with metal, this is the wrong article. You will have to search elsewhere on an even more nerdy Seiko repair site. As you read along, it won't take too keen of an eye to see that the accuracy is not claiming to be Grand Seiko quality...Story

Grammar of Design meets Hi-Beat - a review of the Grand Seiko 4520-8000

Last last year I determined for myself that high frequency watches were definitely one of my collecting topics - and after taking some time to compile a list of high frequency calibres (those beating at 36.000vph or above (here: the overview - and thanks to all who contributed)) I decided to jump into action and to enrich my collection in that direction. And when it comes to Hi-Beat vintage Grand Seikos, Japan is more or less the richest hunting ground. This meant an additional learning curve and much use ... ...Story

My first incoming for 2018: the mysterious Seiko Recraft SRPC15

Seiko seems to have taken quite some in the watch world by surprise at Baselworld 2016, when they launched a renewed Presage line, spearheaded by the two limited edition chronographs with an enamel and Urushi dial respectively. MTF wrote an excellent review (here: for the full report) of both the watches and Seikos global ambitions at the time. The two watches have also found many a warm home with Purists - a roll call from a year ago yielded 18 (here: for the break down), with possibly more added since. .....Story

Grand Seiko SBGA011 "Snowflake" : an In-Depth Review.

Avatar

What a dial. Released in 2010, the Grand Seiko SBGA011 remains one of the iconic timepieces in the GS product lineup and needs little introduction. It is often referred to as the "Snowflake", due to the notable white textured dial like snow. As Baselworld 2017 came about, it was announced that Grand Seiko now becomes an autonomous brand, and their existing product lineup will be revamped...Story

A french Seikoholic in the land of Grand Seiko (the good try)

I was on a trip to Asia last fall, and I planned to make a stop in Tokyo to meet a japanese friend who is a great vintage GS guru. I want to share my impressions on this memorable experience. As a long time Seiko fan, who appreciate the brand and its history, this trip was a kind of return to the roots, to the country where the Grand Seiko watches that I appreciate so much were born. I really hesitated to choose the watch that would be on my wrist...Story

Incoming! Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT

BlueIn2Red
I posted recently about my first Grand Seiko (the Snowflake). I like it so much, and also because I happened to be abroad and was able to get it for a good price, that I bought a Hi-Beat GMT (SBGJ003) to go with it, making for me the ideal GS pairing (light and dark dials, spring drive and hi-beat movements, titanium and steel construction). Perhaps needless to say, I like this a lot too! Build quality is again superb, and the dial is very special, with a very subtle sunburst type texture which is only apparent ... ...Story
