Patek Philippe Steel Calatrava buyer guide

Avatar

If there is a watch I get PM about more than any other its the steel Calatrava, so I prepare this article to help. Patek and steel, never a good mix for your wallet, especially when it comes to vintage. Of the steel vintage Calatrava, the most desirable are the 34mm-35mm. anything bigger and you may as well sell a kidney, actually probably 2 ...Story

A 2-watch collection from the current production of Patek Philippe: budget $150,000

Avatar

Same rules as before, except this time the budget is $150,000 for the two. Which two would you buy from the current collection that would cover all the bases for a 2-watch collection from Patek? This one is much harder than before. I am going with two watches that I don't own. My rationale is that within that budget, it just isn't possible to go for the grand complications so readily! Similarly, one needs two watches that can cover all the bases...Story

A 2-watch collection from Patek Philippe : all periods, budget $1m

Imagine that you could choose a 2-watch collection from Patek Philippe (i am pushing this lower and lower every time!). The only limitation is that there needs to be some financial limitation on what you can choose as 2499s need to come off the table. So, arbitrarily lets set a range of $0.5m-1m as the kitty to go shopping. For me, I need a 2-watch collection to cover as many of my uses for watches as possible...Story

Patek Philippe Split Seconds Chronograph, Ref 5370. A quick view.

Avatar

There are some complications which make watch aficionados dream: The Minute Repeater is certainly one of them, a several axis tourbillon, perhaps, a sophisticated perpetual calendar, an Equation of Time, an astronomical watch, and, last but not least, the Split-Seconds Chronograph. I have a fully intact souvenir of one of my horological discussions with a gentleman in charge of the product development for Jaeger Lecoultre, some ten years ago and he taught me that one of the most " complicated complication ... ...Story

One week with the Black '60A

It has been a joy to wear this 5960A. One thing that has become even more clear to me is that watch dimensions on paper vs. on the wrist have many other factors in play. 40mm width x 48mm length x 13.5mm thickness...Story

Patek Philippe ref: 5227 A quick Review

Avatar
Miranda
With all the noise from the grand complications, Aquanaut hysteria and Nautilus obsession, it is easy to forget perhaps, the most elegant and probably most important piece in the collection- the , automatic Calatrava with date. Ref 3445 Its origins go back to 1961, with the ref 3445. This was the first waterproof, automatic wrist watch with date from the house, and the movement was “amagnetic”. It was the only watch you would need most of the time...Story

When You're a Disappointed Patek Fan After Basel

Avatar
Miles_151
After yet another disappointment for me this year with the new releases I have had time to reflect. I have known for a while that there was a chance that a Salmon dial 5270 was on its way. I have had many many emails and messages regarding the launch of this watch and my thoughts on it. I have to say I have had overwhelming comments pro 5970 with very few negative ones apart from one dealer individual who has been trying to buy my watch off me for several months who thinks that my watch is almost worthless .....Story

Patek Philippe:Baselworld 2018 Review

Avatar

Once again Patek Philippe excelled at the annual watch pilgrimage we call Baselworld. There were standout pieces and here I will give an overview the new collection. I hope to do more in depth reviews of each piece over the coming months. So to start with possibly the star the new collection if not the whole of Baselworld, we have the new ref...Story

Patek Philippe at Basel - my favourite three from the novelties

Avatar
Baron - Mr Red
I am a big believer in "feeling" a watch on my wrist before being able to give a review on it. Obviously, sometimes one just cannot do that and one needs to rely instead on quality images. This year, however, I took the trip to Basel to "feel" the watches first hand. Looking at it through glass windows under harsh lighting can often provide a misleading impression of a watch, especially given the fact that Patek Philippe dials can take on so many hues according to lighting...Story
