A possibly interesting visual history of a certain military pilot/racer chronograph aesthetic…

To some, what I’ve put together below is no secret; but for me it’s been a truly fun ride and learning process. This story/post begins here: 2 mos ago I spotted and felt suddenly and bizarrely compelled to buy this 90s Speedy Auto Date MK40 (3513.53), issued only in Japan for a year as I understand. It looks nothing like a Speedy Moonwatch or Racing watch, other than the lyre lugs and the broad white & black pencil hands used in some Speedys over the years. The subdials are oriented 6-9-12; no hesalite; .....Story

Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture, 2021.

I wanted to share with you a new release from Alpina, which I find very interesting, the Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture. Interesting it is, for three reasons. First and most important, a reminiscence of the Past, with this modern bumper movement which belongs to a bygone era, as it disappeared at the end of the 50's, early 60's, replaced by the rotor we all know, now. The vintage: Here, a picture of the Cal AL 709, which is automatic, of course, beating at 28, 800 vibrations per hour and with a 38 hours .....Story

My selection of the watches around the 2021 edition of the Geneva Watch Days

Avatar

One of the main successes of this Geneva "back-to-school week" was to gather a number of meetings and presentations around the Geneva Watch Days. The line-up was therefore much broader than that of the brands officially participating in the event, which enabled visitors to have a representative view of the year's new products. There were three types of alternative presentations: those made in the Baselworld pop-up, those made in the boutiques (like Purnell's showroom or the Salon des Horlogers for independent ... ...Story

My selection of the watches from the 2021 edition of the Geneva Watch Days

Avatar

The 2021 edition of the Geneva Watch Days was a welcome opportunity for the watchmaking community to meet again with great pleasure. Beyond the joy of the reunion, it gave to the brands the opportunity to present their latest novelties as well as the watches that were unveiled since the beginning of the year. The event was a sort of crossroads between, on the one hand, this review of the last few months and, on the other, the projection towards the end of the year with, for certain brands, the prospect of ... ...Story

Hands on review of the MAD Edition 1 (MAD Gallery & Max Büsser)

Avatar

The big event of the last few weeks is undoubtedly the discovery of the MAD Edition 1, a watch sold by the MAD Gallery exclusively to MB&F clients who have registered as members of the "Tribe" and Friends (people who have collaborated on projects for the brand). In other words, the MAD Edition 1 is not available to the general public and it is the reason why I use the term "discovery" and not "presentation". Because there was no official presentation with fanfare, except for the direct communication to the ... ...Story

Hands on review of the Louis Erard & Alain Silberstein "La Semaine"

Avatar

It is a real firework display that Louis Erard proposes to us this month of June with the presentation of 3 watches resulting from the collaboration with Alain Silberstein. This triptych is, in my opinion, a great success because it manages to renew this approach already implemented a year and a half ago with the Excellence Régulateur. The key to this success lies in the brand new case which defines a new style, radically different from the previous watch. Yet there can be no doubt: whichever watch makes .....Story

Hands on review of the reissue of the Jacques Bianchi JB200

Avatar

The big day has come ! The Kickstarter campaign dedicated to the re-release of Jacques Bianchi's JB 200 has started on June 15th and it is already very successful what is not a surprise for me. Indeed, I have the impression of witnessing a real alignment of planets. The watch has many assets that go far beyond the pure quality of the product. This quality is undeniable and I was able to verify it thanks to the test of the prototype that I had the chance to test for several days...Story

Hands on review of the Louis Erard Excellence Email Grand Feu

Avatar

It cannot be said that Louis Erard is short of ideas. Under the impetus of Manuel Emch, it is finding opportunities to put its collections in the spotlight through partnerships with independent watchmakers or through products that highlight the crafts. In all cases, such approaches are a win-win situation for all parties involved: the work of the watchmaker or craftsman receives media coverage and gains visibility, while Louis Erard gains credibility by strengthening the watchmaking content of its watches. .....Story
